Summary
The government of Mato Grosso has enacted Law No. 12,197/2023, known as “Zero Transportation”: starting in January 2024, for a period of five years, the transportation, trade, and storage of fish from state rivers will be prohibited. The proponents of this law aim to achieve three objectives: to encourage recreational fishing, to end commercial fishing, and to conserve fish stocks. Given this scenario, the profession of “artisanal professional fisherman” is being extinguished in Mato Grosso, and with it, their stories, their knowledge, and their ethno-knowledge about rivers and fish. Therefore, it is necessary to record their stories and desires, in order to immortalize the memory of the fishing population of the Teles Pires River basin for future generations. The objective of this work is to record the stories of fishermen from the upper, middle, and lower portions of the Teles Pires River basin through interviews and the production of a documentary video.
